Game Overview

Shift At Midnight is an online co-op detective horror game developed by Bun Muen and published by Kwalee. Released on July 22, 2026, it challenges you to survive the night shift at a remote gas station where not every customer is human. You work the counter at a lonely gas station on an empty highway, responsible for stocking shelves, accepting deliveries, cleaning the store, and serving customers. The catch: some customers are doppelgangers — creatures disguised as ordinary people. You must inspect ID paperwork, ask questions, and decide who's real before they escape into the night. Shift At Midnight supports 1 to 3 players in online co-op (6-player lobbies were added in a July 23 update) with proximity chat. First Shift Survival

If something feels wrong, that instinct is usually correct. Treat every customer as a potential doppelganger until proven otherwise. Taking an extra five seconds per customer is infinitely better than facing a monster attack later.

Restocking & Cleaning

Keeping the store stocked and clean is essential. Empty shelves frustrate real customers and a dirty store costs points at the end of each shift. Prioritize restocking during quiet periods and always clean before the shift timer expires. Use lulls in customer traffic to maintain the store so you're not scrambling during busy periods.

Employer Random Tasks

During each shift, your employer may assign random 60-second tasks for a $10-$30 bonus. Four types exist: Cockroach Extermination (use Water Cleaner), Mouse Extermination (throw or shoot mice), Store Cleaning (clear all dirt), and Collecting Meat in the Forest (gather 15 pieces). Shifts 1-3 Walkthrough

The first three shifts serve as a tutorial for the game's mechanics. Customer traffic is light and doppelgangers are rare. Use these early shifts to master the basics: serving customers efficiently, checking paperwork thoroughly, and completing employer tasks. Focus on building good habits that will serve you in later shifts. The key skills to develop during these early shifts are consistent customer observation, efficient task management, and counter workflow mastery. Night 3 Rotation Details

Night 3 is when the rotation opens up. The Fandom wiki's shift documentation lists the confirmed named cast for Shift 3: Ryan Holt, the Robber, Tommy Delgado (who can appear as a doppelganger on this exact night), and Colin Shirley — plus random customers filling out the queue. This is also the first night the Tommy Delgado doppelganger variant is documented, so treat him as a high-priority ID check — his tell and every other doppelganger tell are on the complete doppelganger list. Shift 1's roster is fully scripted (Clyde Dawson, Bonnie McCree, Nathan Calloway, Julietta Granger, Kevin Larson, Bartholomew Kessler — all human), and Shift 2 introduces Roger Conroy and Norbert. From Night 3 on, the schedule becomes procedurally generated: the named pool rotates, and any customer can be a doppelganger. Verify everyone, every shift.

Shifts 4-6 Walkthrough

By shifts 4 through 6, the difficulty ramps up significantly. Customer traffic increases and doppelgangers appear more frequently. You may encounter your first monsters if you miss a doppelganger. The Screaming Creatures may make their first appearance during these shifts. Prioritize doppelganger detection above all else during this phase. Shifts 7-9 Walkthrough

Shifts 7 through 9 introduce more dangerous monsters. The Gnome may make its first appearance, disrupting your store operations by running through shelves. Random employer tasks become more frequent and more challenging. Team coordination becomes essential in multiplayer mode. This phase requires you to always have bear traps ready and know your escape routes. The ventilation system becomes a critical tool during these shifts as multiple monsters may be active simultaneously. Keep calm and follow your established routines.

Shifts 10-13 Walkthrough

The final four shifts are the most intense experience Shift At Midnight has to offer. The Fast Red Creature, Phantom, and Demon can all appear in these late-game shifts. The Fake Bus Driver is most common during these final shifts and may attempt to trick your team at the worst possible moment. The ultimate challenge is the final boss, The Dentist — a fast-moving monster that breaks through boarded-up doors and is vulnerable only to fire. Our recommended strategy is to focus fire as a team while one player kites the boss away from teammates. Never let yourself get cornered against walls. Doppelgangers exhibit subtle behavioral differences from real customers. They may stand unnaturally still, fail to make eye contact, or behave unusually during transactions. Some experienced players report that doppelgangers take slightly longer to complete their purchases or move in unnatural patterns. Trust your instincts — if a customer feels wrong, they probably are. Question & Paperwork Verification

Every customer has paperwork that must be checked before they leave. Examine their ID carefully, cross-reference the details in your computer system, and ask questions about their visit. Doppelgangers often have inconsistencies in their stories or paperwork that a thorough check will reveal. Make this process automatic — never skip it even during busy periods.

Ventilation System Guide

How Ventilation Works

The ventilation system provides a temporary hiding place when monsters are active. You can enter vents to escape pursuit, reposition yourself across the store, or buy time while teammates complete tasks. The vents connect several areas of the gas station and can be used strategically.

The Flesh Mass Timer

If you remain inside a vent for approximately 20 to 30 seconds, a large mass of living flesh begins moving through the shaft. It fills the passage and approaches your position, eventually forcing you back outside. Always leave the vent before the flesh appears to maintain control of where you exit.

When to Use Vents

Use ventilation to escape an active pursuit, reposition to a different area of the store, or wait out a monster patrol. Never use vents as a permanent safe zone. Always plan your exit route before entering a vent so you don't emerge directly in front of another monster.

Endless Mode

Endless Mode unlocks after completing all 13 Story Mode shifts, providing infinite shifts with escalating difficulty and exclusive enemies.
