The Dentist — Final Boss

The Dentist is the final boss of Shift At Midnight, appearing during the climactic shifts of Story Mode. Confirmed by Dawko's YouTube playthrough as the ultimate threat, The Dentist moves quickly across the gas station, breaks through boarded-up doors, and is notably vulnerable to fire damage. The Dentist reveals itself during the ending sequence and carries significant narrative weight — Dawko's video "Shift At Midnight TRUE ENDING - THE DENTIST IS REVEALED" confirms a narrative twist about its identity.

The Dentist boss in Shift At Midnight

The Dentist

  • Type: Final boss of Story Mode
  • Behavior: Fast pursuit, smashes boarded doors
  • Weakness: Fire damage

Behaviour & Attack Patterns

  • Fast pursuit: The Dentist moves much faster than standard enemies. It closes distance rapidly and can corner players against walls.
  • Door breaker: It smashes through boarded-up doors, so barricades only buy you seconds, not safety.
  • Fire weakness: The Dentist is vulnerable to fire-based attacks. Use fire when available to deal maximum damage.

Survival Strategy

Team coordination is essential. Designate one player to kite the boss — drawing its attention and running in wide circles — while others focus damage from a distance. Keep moving at all times and never let yourself get cornered against walls. If the fight becomes overwhelming, retreat through the ventilation system and regroup. In solo play, use bear traps for area denial and maintain constant distance.

Monster encounter in Shift At Midnight

The Entity & The Hunt

The Entity is a spider-like being of abnormal size — one of the main antagonists of Shift At Midnight. It does not appear at the counter like a normal monster; instead, the Entity arrives at the end of your shift through a triggered event called the Hunt. If a doppelganger slips through and is never caught and killed, it alerts the Entity, which comes to the store after the last customer has been checked out. The Fandom wiki also notes a Blood Moon event forces the Hunt to occur no matter what.

The Entity in Shift At Midnight

The Entity

  • Type: Hunt event — missed doppelganger or Blood Moon
  • Prep: 60-second countdown to arm the store
  • Counter: Flamethrower, traps, quiet voice chat

How the Hunt Works

  • Trigger: Let at least one doppelganger go through, or have a Blood Moon event active. Difficulty scales with how many doppelgangers were checked out.
  • Power cut: A few seconds after the last customer checks out, the power shuts down — the lights and computer go dark, and a slight red light fills the store.
  • 60-second countdown: You get roughly 60 seconds to set traps, board doors, and arm yourself before the Entity arrives.
  • Entry points: The Entity most commonly comes through the front door, but it can also use the back doors or the doors outside the Toilet. Wooden boards slow it down and deal slight damage as it breaks through.
  • Blind but listening: The Entity is blind — it hunts by sound, including both in-game noises and your voice chat. Being too loud for too long makes it focus on you, sprinting and shooting webs.

Survival Strategy

The Entity can't be killed outright — the goal is to survive until it loses patience and leaves on its own, and dealing damage just hurries it along. The Flamethrower is the most effective weapon against it, and traps plus boarded doors buy you the time you need. Watch for additional creatures that can appear alongside it and complicate the fight. Board every door you can before the countdown ends — the extra seconds of destruction are your best buffer. Keep voice chat disciplined: callouts in short bursts, not sustained chatter, or the Entity will lock onto your position.

Fast Red Creature

The Fast Red Creature appears when you attempt to escape with a fake bus driver present. This enemy glows bright red, moves at extreme speed across the store, and critically disables all weapons — pistol, shotgun, and baseball bat become useless. It also ignores boarded-up doors, making standard defenses ineffective.

Behaviour & Attack Patterns

  • Weapon disable: All weapons are disabled when this creature appears. You cannot shoot or melee it.
  • Extreme speed: It is the fastest enemy in the game and can cross the entire store in seconds.
  • Trigger condition: Spawns when two players press the exit button simultaneously with a fake bus driver present.

Survival Strategy

The ONLY reliable counter is a bear trap. Place one near the bus exit area before approaching the bus. When the creature appears, run toward the prepared trap and ensure it follows the same path. A well-positioned bear trap destroys the Fast Red Creature instantly. Always check the bus driver before ending your shift — knowing whether the driver is real or fake is your first defense.

The Phantom

The Phantom is one of the deadliest enemies in Shift At Midnight, using a Weeping Angel-style mechanic — it can only move toward you when you are NOT looking at it. It moves extremely quickly and deals massive damage in just a few hits.

The Phantom in Shift At Midnight

The Phantom

  • Behavior: Weeping Angel — moves only when unobserved
  • Damage: Heavy, 1-2 hits
  • Counter: Eye contact + bear trap

Behaviour & Attack Patterns

  • Eye contact freeze: The Phantom cannot move toward you while you maintain direct eye contact.
  • Burst damage: If it catches you, expect heavy damage in just 1-2 hits.
  • Silent approach: Unlike other monsters, the Phantom makes minimal sound while moving.

Survival Strategy

The critical survival strategy is to maintain direct eye contact while walking backwards toward a pre-placed bear trap. Walk backwards slowly while keeping the Phantom centered on your screen. The bear trap immobilizes it, giving you the opening to escape or finish it. An alternative method involves the restroom: board up both entrance and exit doors, lead the Phantom toward a stall door, then look away — the Phantom breaks the door and is destroyed. However, this restroom method may be patched in a future update according to community reports.

The Gnome

The Gnome, sometimes referred to as Norbert by the community, appears three times per shift with increasingly disruptive behavior. Each appearance requires immediate action.

The Gnome in Shift At Midnight

The Gnome (Norbert)

  • Appears: Three times per shift
  • Behavior: Knocks shelves, blocks the door, motorcycle rush
  • Counter: Firearm, the moment it shows

Three Appearances

  • First: Runs unpredictably between shelves, knocking items down and causing chaos. Shoot it immediately with a firearm.
  • Second: Arrives in a car and blocks the store entrance. Attack as soon as the car stops moving.
  • Third: Rides a motorcycle through the store at high speed, destroying objects in its path. Shoot at the first clear opportunity.

Survival Strategy

For all three appearances, always use a firearm — never chase the Gnome with a bat or melee weapon. Each appearance is time-sensitive; the longer you wait, the more store disruption (and potential missed customer detection) occurs. Stay calm, line up your shot, and take it down quickly.

The Demon

The Demon in Shift At Midnight behaves differently from every other enemy. It can pass through walls, flies directly toward players, and kills slowly rather than dealing burst damage. The unique danger is that dealing damage to the Demon makes it stronger and faster — attacking is counterproductive.

The Demon in Shift At Midnight

The Demon

  • Behavior: Phases through walls; grows stronger when hit
  • Warning: Chest spawns with music before it emerges
  • Counter: Avoidance only — never attack

Behaviour & Attack Patterns

  • Wall phasing: The Demon bypasses all obstacles, including boarded doors and walls.
  • Damage amplification: Every hit makes the Demon faster and stronger. Never attack it.
  • Spawn warning: A chest spawns in the store and plays music for 10-15 seconds before the Demon emerges. Confetti explodes from the chest as it appears.

Survival Strategy

Avoidance is the only correct strategy. When you see the chest spawn or hear the music, evacuate the area immediately. Keep an escape route open at all times during shifts where the Demon may appear (shifts 7+). Use the ventilation system to relocate across the store. Never waste ammunition attacking the Demon.

Screaming Creatures

Screaming Creatures are small enemies that apply a slowing effect when they detect you. A few seconds after the slow takes effect, they jump directly forward toward your position, dealing heavy damage on contact.

Behaviour & Attack Patterns

  • Slow application: Being detected by a Screaming Creature applies a movement speed debuff.
  • Forward jump: After the slow, it performs a lunging jump toward your position.
  • Group threat: Multiple Screaming Creatures together can chain-stun you with their slow effect.

Survival Strategy

The correct dodge technique is to move sideways (left or right) at the last moment before the jump, rather than moving backward. Use a firearm to eliminate them from range before they reach you, or finish them with a bat at close range. Prioritize them when multiple enemies are present — their slow effect can prevent you from escaping larger monsters.

Fake Bus Driver

The Fake Bus Driver is a unique doppelganger threat that appears at the most critical moment — the end of your shift. Instead of a monster that chases you directly, this is a trap that triggers another enemy.

The Fake Bus Driver in Shift At Midnight

Fake Bus Driver

  • Type: End-of-shift trap
  • Check: Inspect the driver seat before boarding
  • Trigger: Two players pressing exit → Fast Red Creature

How It Works

  • Prevention: Before boarding the bus, walk to the side and inspect the driver's seat through the window. If the seat is empty, the bus is safe. If someone is sitting behind the wheel, the driver is a doppelganger.
  • Trigger: If two players press the exit button simultaneously while a fake driver is present, the Fast Red Creature immediately rushes out of the bus and attacks.
  • Solo play: A single player pressing the button with a fake driver present may still trigger the Fast Red Creature — always check first.

Survival Strategy

Make bus inspection the last step of every shift, automatic and non-negotiable. If you find a fake driver, do not board and do not press the exit button. Set a bear trap near the bus exit area as insurance, then handle the fake driver situation. In co-op, communicate clearly: "Real driver" or "Fake driver" before anyone presses the button.

Demented & Marionette (Variant Enemies)

Beyond the 7 main monster types, Shift At Midnight features additional variant enemies that appear under specific conditions.

Demented

The Demented is a tall, slender creature with elongated arms, short dark hair, pitch-black eyes, a wide grin, and miniature wailing faces scattered across its body. It is first introduced by N.E.T. through an email and debuts around Shift 4, appearing alongside the Entity during hunt phases. It is associated with the "Freed" achievement (79.5% unlock rate), which requires killing a Demented. The only reliable way to kill the Demented is to lure it into bear traps — standard weapons are not dependable against it. It freezes whenever you're looking at it and moves rapidly the moment you look away or lose line of sight. Note that you cannot purchase items while the Entity is present, so buy your bear traps before the shift ends.

The Demented in Shift At Midnight

The Demented

  • Type: Rare variant, debuts around Shift 4
  • Behavior: Freezes when watched, dashes when unobserved
  • Counter: Bear traps only
  • Achievement: Freed (79.5%)

Marionette

The Marionette is a string-and-puppet enemy tied to the Jack-in-the-Box. During your ninth shift, N.E.T. emails a warning about the box; when its music starts playing, find it and rewind it before the melody plays three times. Fail to stop it, and the Marionette appears. It's tougher than a regular Entity, but enough ammunition will bring it down — and with a friend or two, the fight gets much easier. Killing one unlocks the "Last Performance" achievement (41.0% unlock rate).

Shrieking Doll

The Shrieking Doll is one of the most common monster types encountered in Shift At Midnight — killing one unlocks the "Silenced" achievement (89.6% unlock rate). It appears early in the game (shifts 4-6) and serves as the player's introduction to monster combat. While less dangerous than The Phantom or The Dentist, Shrieking Dolls can be deadly in groups or when encountered during an active hunt phase with other monsters present. Use a firearm to eliminate them from range, or finish with a bat at close range after dodging their attack.

Rakes — Endless Mode Forest Monsters

Rakes are the monsters added in the July 29 update, and they appear only in Endless Mode and post-story play. They slowly emerge from the forest beside the store, glowing red so you can spot them from a distance — and the official patch notes are blunt about the stakes: shoot them before they reach the playable area, or bad stuff will happen. A shot doesn't put a Rake down for good; it retreats, relocates, and starts approaching again, so Rakes are a constant pressure you manage rather than clear. See the Rakes section in our Endless Mode guide for the full behavior breakdown.

The key to surviving any boss encounter starts long before the monster appears — by successfully identifying doppelgangers during customer service. Learn how to identify all Doppelganger disguises in our Characters page to prevent monster encounters before they begin.

General Boss Tips

Bear Traps Are Your Best Friend: The Fast Red Creature can ONLY be killed with a bear trap. The Phantom is best handled with a bear trap. The Dentist can be slowed with bear traps. Always keep at least two bear traps in reserve, and place them at chokepoints — front door, bus stop area, and hallway junctions — before threats appear.

  • Know your escape routes: Before any boss encounter, identify your nearest ventilation shaft, boarded room, and open corridor. The ventilation system gives you 20-30 seconds of safety before flesh fills the shaft.
  • Team callouts: In co-op, use simple one-word callouts: "Dentist north," "trap set," "venting" to keep your team coordinated without confusion.
  • Don't fight everything: The Demon must be avoided, not attacked. The Gnome must be shot immediately. Match your strategy to the monster — what works against one may be deadly against another.
  • Prioritize threats: Screaming Creatures first (their slow effect is dangerous in multi-monster scenarios), then The Phantom or Fast Red Creature, then the others.
  • Prepare before the hunt: During quiet periods between customers, set traps and board up doors. Good preparation turns desperate boss fights into manageable encounters.
