Game Overview

Shift At Midnight is an online co-op detective horror game developed by Bun Muen and published by Kwalee. In this game, players work the night shift at a remote gas station where some customers are doppelgangers — creatures disguised as ordinary people. The game uniquely blends gas station management simulation with survival horror elements, creating a tense experience where every customer interaction could be your last. Players must balance routine tasks like stocking shelves and serving customers with the critical responsibility of identifying and eliminating doppelgangers before they escape and return as monsters.

The game was released on July 22, 2026 for Windows PC via Steam at a price of $8.99 (normally $9.99). It is also available natively on Xbox and GamePass at launch with full crossplay support between those platforms. Steam crossplay and a dedicated server browser are planned as post-release updates according to the developer's FAQ on bunmuen.com. The original demo was released on itch.io where it received over 873 comments from enthusiastic players, leading developer Bun Muen to upgrade the game into a full multiplayer co-op experience.

The full game features 13 randomly generated shifts in Story Mode, each procedurally generated so no two playthroughs are the same. After completing all 13 shifts, players unlock Endless Mode for infinite gameplay with escalating difficulty. A free multiplayer demo is available on Steam (App ID 4050060) offering approximately 40 minutes of gameplay across 3 fixed nights. The demo lacks the random generation system, complete monster lineup including The Dentist boss fight, and Endless Mode found in the full game.

Core Game Mechanics

For the complete Doppelganger schedule and Endless Mode breakdown, check our Nights Guide.

The Shift System

Shift At Midnight features 13 story-driven shifts in Story Mode. Each shift is randomly generated, meaning customer types, doppelganger frequency, monster encounters, and employer tasks change every playthrough. The difficulty follows a clear curve: shifts 1-3 serve as a tutorial with light traffic, shifts 4-6 introduce more doppelgangers and first monster encounters, shifts 7-9 ramp up with the Gnome and Screaming Creatures, and shifts 10-13 feature the full monster lineup culminating in The Dentist boss fight. After completing all 13 shifts, Endless Mode unlocks.

Customer Service Workflow

The proper customer service workflow is: approach the counter when a customer arrives, begin the transaction by scanning or ringing up their items, observe their behavior carefully during the transaction, check their ID paperwork in your computer system, ask one or more questions about their visit, and make a determination. If you identify a doppelganger, execute them before they complete payment. If they're human, complete the sale normally. Never skip steps in this workflow, as rushing is the most common cause of missed doppelgangers. For a full list of all characters and every doppelganger, see our complete database with photo comparisons.

Employer Random Tasks

Four types of random tasks may be assigned by your employer during each shift, each with a 60-second timer and a $10-$30 bonus. Cockroach Extermination requires using the Water Cleaner to eliminate roaches throughout the store. Mouse Extermination involves picking up mice with the right mouse button and throwing them against walls, or shooting them with a pistol. Store Cleaning requires methodically cleaning every dirty spot in the building. Collecting Meat in the Forest sends you outside to gather 15 meat pieces while watching your surroundings. Complete these tasks quickly but don't neglect customer service while doing so.

Scoring & Progression

Your performance is scored based on customers served correctly, employer tasks completed, store cleanliness, restocked shelves, monsters survived, and doppelgangers identified. Higher scores contribute to Endless Mode unlock progress. Balance speed with thoroughness for maximum scores.

Characters & Doppelgangers

Shift At Midnight features a cast of named characters including Nathan Calloway, Julietta Granger, Brandon Keller, Judith Calhoun, Jade Sinclair, Tommy Delgado, and Clyde Dawson — any of whom could be a doppelganger in disguise. See our complete character guide for the full roster, or jump straight to the complete doppelganger list with every tell.

In co-op, three roles work well: Counter Manager (sales and gas pump), Security Inspector (paperwork and doppelganger detection), and Defense Specialist (traps and barricades). The detection workflow — paperwork → questioning → behavior observation — applies to every customer, every shift, without exception.

Monsters & Bosses

Shift At Midnight features 7 monster types — The Dentist, Fast Red Creature, Phantom, Gnome, Demon, Screaming Creatures, and Fake Bus Driver — plus Demented, Marionette, and Shrieking Doll variants. For the full breakdown of every monster with detailed survival strategies, see our boss guide.

Items & Equipment

Bear traps and barricades in Shift At Midnight

Weapons

Three weapons are available in Shift At Midnight. The pistol offers reliable ranged damage against most enemies and is the most versatile option. The shotgun provides devastating close-range power but reloads slower. The baseball bat is silent but requires close engagement, making it risky against faster enemies. Choose your weapon based on the situation and your role in the team.

Bear Traps

Bear traps are the single most versatile tool in the game. They can destroy the Fast Red Creature when no other weapon works, immobilize the Phantom when combined with the stare mechanic, and provide area denial against The Dentist. Always keep at least two bear traps in reserve. Place them at chokepoints before threats appear — key locations include the front door, the bus stop area, and hallway junctions.

Boarding Materials & Water Cleaner

Boarding up doors and windows provides temporary protection against monsters, though The Dentist and Fast Red Creature can break through wooden barricades. Use boarding as a delaying tactic rather than a permanent solution. The Water Cleaner is used specifically for the Cockroach Extermination employer task and is not effective as a weapon against monsters.

EmotiScope & Anomaly Lens

The EmotiScope is introduced around Shift 6 according to the Fandom wiki's shift documentation. It reads a customer's emotional state — the wiki's character scripts show it reporting "This person is feeling: [emotion]" — and the reading can expose a doppelganger: Ramona Delgado's doppelganger, for instance, is read by the EmotiScope as craving human flesh. The Anomaly Lens (used via the camera) reveals visual distortions that plain sight misses, such as Aria Romero's distorted face or Yasmin Carvalho's missing jewelry. Between the ID check, the EmotiScope reading, and the Anomaly Lens, a full verification uses every tool the store gives you.

Environments

The gas station in Shift At Midnight consists of several key areas: the main store with shelves and the front counter, a back room containing the computer system for ID verification, restrooms that can serve as temporary hiding spots, the gas pump area outside, and the bus stop where shifts end. The ventilation system connects several areas and provides emergency escape routes with a 20-30 second timer before a living flesh mass pushes you out. The surrounding forest is used for the Collecting Meat employer task and should be navigated quickly and carefully.

Endless Mode

How to Unlock

Endless Mode unlocks after completing all 13 Story Mode shifts. According to the developer's FAQ, this is the only unlock requirement. Once unlocked, Endless Mode provides infinite shifts with continuously escalating difficulty and exclusive content not found in Story Mode.

Endless Mode Features & Tips

Endless Mode differs significantly from Story Mode. There are no breaks between shifts, difficulty escalates continuously, and exclusive customers, monsters, and events appear. The recommended strategy is to stockpile bear traps aggressively during the early stages, designate one room as your safe room with boarded-up entrances, and prioritize survival over profit. A major Endless Mode BETA update is planned for Q4 2026 with exclusive customers, weapons, traps, and monsters.

The August 20 official patch added 15 new customers to the Story and Endless Mode rotations, and community documentation has since identified 9 of them — 6 with confirmed doppelganger tells and 3 seen only as humans so far, with the remaining 6 still being confirmed. Run the full detection workflow — paperwork, questioning, behavior — on every new face, every shift, and never assume a customer is safe just because you haven't seen them before.

Multiplayer & Crossplay Guide

Co-op for Up to 3 Players

Shift At Midnight supports 1-3 players in online co-op. The difficulty scales based on player count — more players mean more customers, more doppelgangers, and tougher monsters, but also more hands to manage tasks and threats. Playing with a full team of 3 offers the best experience as roles can be divided effectively. A post-launch update (July 23, 2026) introduced 6-player lobby support — the developer's official announcement notes the game is designed and has always been marketed around a maximum of 3 players, but larger lobbies are now available for those who want them.

Proximity Chat

The game features proximity-based voice chat, meaning players close to each other can communicate naturally while distance muffles voice. This adds immersion and requires teams to stay close or develop non-verbal communication methods. Develop simple callout words for efficient communication during high-stress moments.

Crossplay Information

Shift At Midnight supports native crossplay between Xbox and GamePass versions at launch. Steam crossplay and a dedicated server browser are not available at launch but are planned as post-release updates according to the developer's FAQ on bunmuen.com. This means Xbox and GamePass players can play together immediately, while Steam players join later.
