10 Advanced Tips You NEED to Know

1. Check Every Customer's Paperwork Without Exception

The single most important rule in Shift At Midnight is to never skip paperwork. Every customer who walks into your store could be a doppelganger. Make it an automatic habit to examine their ID, cross-reference details in your computer system, and ask a question before completing any sale. This simple step prevents 90% of monster encounters before they start. Skipping this step even once can cost you the entire shift when that customer returns as a monster.

2. Execute Suspected Doppelgangers Before Payment

If you suspect a customer might be a doppelganger, do not complete the transaction first. Execute them while they're still at the counter. Waiting until after they pay gives them a chance to escape the store and return as a monster later in the shift. This is one of the most important timing tips in the game. Develop the reflex to act immediately when suspicion is confirmed.

3. Always Keep Bear Traps in Reserve

Bear traps are your most important defensive tool. Always keep at least two in reserve for emergencies. Place them at key chokepoints before threats appear rather than scrambling to set them during an attack when every second counts. The best locations are the front door area, the bus stop zone, and hallway junctions. A well-placed bear trap can neutralize threats that weapons cannot handle.

4. Use the Ventilation System Only as a Temporary Escape

The ventilation system buys you 20 to 30 seconds of safety before a living flesh mass pushes you out. Never treat vents as a permanent hiding spot. Plan where you'll go after exiting before you enter. A controlled exit prevents you from dropping directly into another monster's path, which can happen if you wait until the flesh mass forces you out.

5. Prioritize Doppelganger Detection Over Everything

Every doppelganger you miss makes the later part of your shift exponentially harder. Stocking shelves, cleaning, and serving customers are important tasks, but identifying fake customers is your primary job. If you have to choose between completing a task and thoroughly checking a customer, always choose the customer. A missed doppelganger can end your entire playthrough.

6. Check the Bus Driver Before Ending Your Shift

One of the deadliest traps in Shift At Midnight is the Fake Bus Driver that appears at shift end. Before boarding the bus to leave, walk to the side and check through the window to see if someone is sitting behind the wheel. If the driver's seat is empty, the bus is safe. If someone is there, the driver is a doppelganger — do not board and do not press the exit button. If two players press the button with a fake driver present, the Fast Red Creature immediately attacks.

7. Dodge Sideways Against Screaming Creatures

When Screaming Creatures prepare their jump attack, moving directly backwards is ineffective because they jump straight toward your position. Instead, move left or right at the last moment before the jump connects. The creature will miss and land past you, giving you several seconds to eliminate it with a weapon or bat. Practice this timing because multiple Screaming Creatures appearing together can quickly overwhelm you.

8. Never Attack the Demon

The Demon has a unique mechanic that contradicts standard combat logic: dealing damage to it makes it stronger and faster. Unlike every other enemy where attacking is the correct response, the Demon requires avoidance. Keep an escape route open at all times during shifts where the Demon may appear. Stay away from it whenever possible and never waste ammunition attacking it.

9. Maintain Eye Contact With the Phantom

The Phantom moves extremely fast and deals massive damage, but it has one critical weakness: it cannot move toward you while you maintain direct eye contact. Walk backwards slowly toward a prepared bear trap while keeping the Phantom centered on your screen. If you turn away even for a moment, it closes the distance instantly and can kill you in seconds. This requires discipline — resist the urge to turn and run.

10. Divide Roles and Rotate in Co-op

In multiplayer, assign specific roles to maximize efficiency. One player manages the counter and gas pump, one handles paperwork verification and doppelganger detection, and one prepares bear traps and boards up doors. Rotate roles between shifts to prevent fatigue and keep everyone engaged. Use proximity chat with simple callout words: "check" for suspicious customers, "execute" for confirmed doppelgangers, and "hide" for monster alerts.

Beginner Tips

Counter & Gas Pump Are Top Priority

Your core responsibility is manning the counter and gas pump. Every other task is secondary to customer service. When a customer arrives, serve them promptly — long wait times cost points and may cause you to miss detection opportunities. Use quiet periods between customers to restock shelves and clean the store.

Clean the Store & Restock Before Shift Ends

A dirty store with empty shelves costs you bonus points at the end of each shift. Make it a habit to clean and restock during every quiet moment rather than leaving it until the last 60 seconds when you might be dealing with a monster or employer task.

Watch Every Customer Carefully

Take your time with every single customer. Observe their behavior carefully, check their paperwork thoroughly, and trust your instincts. A slow, thorough approach is far more effective than a fast, sloppy one. The extra few seconds per customer is time well spent.

Intermediate Tips

Use Layered Detection at Peak Hours

When multiple customers arrive during busy periods, use a layered detection approach. Serve customers at a reasonable pace but keep one eye on behavior. If a customer seems suspicious, hold them at the counter while you complete the transaction with the next customer. This prevents doppelgangers from slipping through during busy moments.

Execute Before Completing Payment

Always execute suspected doppelgangers before they complete their payment. The moment you confirm a fake customer, act immediately without hesitation. Even a few seconds of delay can give them the escape window they need.

Communication Shorthand

Develop a simple but effective communication system with your team. Use one word for a suspicious customer you're not sure about ("check"), another for a confirmed doppelganger ("execute"), and another for a monster alert requiring immediate hiding ("hide"). This shorthand prevents confusion during high-stress moments.

Monster-Specific Tips

The Dentist (Final Boss)

The Dentist moves quickly, breaks through boarded doors, and is vulnerable to fire. Assign one player to draw its attention and kite it around the store while others deal damage. Keep moving continuously and never let yourself get cornered against walls. If the fight becomes unmanageable, retreat through the ventilation system to regroup.

Fast Red Creature

The Fast Red Creature disables all weapons and breaks through doors. The ONLY reliable counter is a bear trap. Place one near the bus exit area before approaching the bus. When the creature appears, run toward the trap and ensure it follows the same path.

Gnome

The Gnome appears three times, each more disruptive. First appearance: runs unpredictably through shelves — shoot immediately. Second: blocks the entrance with a car — attack as soon as the car stops. Third: rides a motorcycle through the store at high speed — shoot at the first clear opportunity. Use firearms for all three appearances.

Phantom

Constant eye contact is the key to surviving the Phantom. As long as you look directly at it, it cannot move toward you. Walk backwards slowly toward a pre-placed bear trap. If using the restroom door method, board up both entrance and exit doors before leading the Phantom to the stall door.

Screaming Creatures

When Screaming Creatures begin their attack sequence, they first slow you down then perform a forward jump. Time a sideways dash at the last moment to avoid the jump. Practice this dodge because multiple Screaming Creatures appearing together can overwhelm you quickly.

Demon

Before the Demon spawns, a chest appears in the store and plays music for 10-15 seconds. Confetti then explodes from the chest as the Demon emerges. When you see these warning signs, evacuate the area rather than preparing to fight. Remember: attacking the Demon makes it stronger, so avoidance is the only correct strategy.

Endless Mode Tips

Endless Mode differs significantly from Story Mode. There are no breaks between shifts and difficulty escalates continuously. Prioritize bear trap stockpiling during the early stages of Endless Mode. Designate one room as your safe room and board up all entrances. Keep a clear escape route through the ventilation system. In Endless Mode, survival is more important than completing every task or serving every customer. The strategy shifts from profit-focused to survival-focused.
